Traditionally, tilak and lemon juice is the ideal way to clean and bathe deities. Tilak is also a wonderfully earth-friendly alternative to metal polish when combined with lemon juice (and a little baking soda, depending on the metal).

Best Tilak Ever
I've been using tilaka for almost forty years, and Gopi Chandan Brand has always been my go-to choice for smooth, grit-free, pleasantly scented, easy-mixing application. My only "con" is that they've now opted for a plastic inner sleeve, versus the paper ones I used to enjoy collecting so much. I suppose I will have to learn to live with the changes, as I've had to adapt to so many other "improvements" of this world. C'est la vie. Hare Krishna.
