Beads are used for meditating and chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. The strand consists of one hundred and eight individually hand-carved, smooth beads made of the wood from a sacred Tulasi plant.
These beads are about 30" long (or about 60" around). The length may vary due to the size of the beads. The beads are up to .6" in diameter each. This style of japa mala is made from small beads that have been smoothed and rounded for comfort.
Tulasi is a soft, fiberous wood that is suceptible to moisture and temerature damage. These beads can warp and crack if exposed to humidity, water, or a lot of direct heat and sunlight. It is popular for user to oil their Tulasi beads prior to use, and to keep them clean and dry. Vaisnavas also respect their japa mala beads and do not take them into environments such as restooms. Traditionally, they are kept and used in a japa bag, also available.
