These are used for japa, or mantra meditation. The set consists of 108 wooden beads and one head bead. They are made of sacred Tulasi wood and are suggested for intermediate or regular practitioners.
This large set would be most comfortable for people with large hands or those whose health makes it difficult to handle small objects. Traditionally, they are kept and used in a bead bag.
These beads are about 31" long (or about 62" around). Exact length varies 3-5" because of bead size. The beads are up to .4" in diameter each.
The ‘head bead’ is finished with a golden-yellow tassel.
Tulasi is a soft, fiberous wood that is suceptible to moisture and temerature damage. These beads can warp and crack if exposed to humidity, water, or a lot of direct heat and sunlight. It is popular for user to oil their Tulasi beads prior to use, and to keep them clean and dry. Vaisnavas also respect their japa mala beads and do not take them into environments such as restooms. Traditionally, they are kept and used in a japa bag, also available.
